Scholarship Miss Elk Rapids
Miss Elk Rapids 2010 – Beverly Fryer
On April 17, 2010, Elk Rapids eagerly anticipated the crowning of their new queen. This year’s theme was "Rockin’ Through the Decade," where five contestants anxiously competed before a panel of six judges. Beverley Fryer was selected as queen along with graduates of Elk Rapids High School, Natalie O’Fallon Hollabaugh as 1st runner-up and Lisa Hoover as 2nd runner-up. Along with earning the $4000 queen’s scholarship, Beverley also received top points in the talent portion of the show.
Beverley is the 21-year-old daughter of Steve and Colleen Fryer. She is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and is currently a student at the University of Michigan, but will be spending a year at NMC. While enrolled at ERHS, she participated in many extra curricular music events in groups such as choir, Chamber choir, ERHS band, and the Traverse Youth Symphony Orchestra, as well as performances in musical theatre, Honors Band, and Solo and Ensemble. She was also very involved with art and various art forms. Beverley was 2nd runner-up to Miss Elk Rapids in 2009.
Beverley has completed two full years of college at the University of Michigan where she is working towards a degree in art and creative design. Once she completes her degree, her goals are to travel and work with wild and exotic cats on conservations around the world. She hopes that one day her art will bring attention to her efforts to help preserve wildlife. Beverley enjoys art, Bikram Yoga, music, bike riding, hiking, spending time with family and friends, and meeting new people.
Our Pageant Contestants compete in four categories. The first category is Interview. There are two interviews worth a total of 30 percent of the overall score. During the first interview the contestants are asked to present a prepared speech about themselves to a panel of judges. The judges will then have the remaining time to ask questions about the contestant based on the speech or application. During the second interview, all of the contestants are asked the same questions. The second category is Casual Wear with Prepared Speech. During this portion of the pageant, each contestant chooses a song and causal outfit that reflects her personality. The contestant then models and presents a prepared speech. The speech topic is determined by the pageant director and presented to the contestant when her application has been accepted. This portion of the competition is worth 20 percent. The third category of competition is Creative and Performing Arts. This portion of the competition is worth 30 percent of the overall score and is designed to display the contestant's talent. Previous talents have included, singing, dancing, playing a musical instrument, dramatic reading, poetry, art, clothing, or craft display, creative writing, etc. The final category of competition is Formal Modeling. This segment is worth 20 percent of the overall score. It is designed to showcase the contestant's poise and ability to speak under pressure. Each contestant models a gown of her choice and is asked a question that has randomly been selected for her. Each contestant's question will be different.

Our History The first Miss Elk Rapids pageant was held in 1929. Margret Bachi was chosen queen that year and later went on to become the National Cherry Queen. Since that time, the name of the pageant has changed from Miss Elk Rapids to Miss Chain of Lakes and back again, but our mission is still the same.
