David Mengebier, President and CEO
Prior to joining the Community Foundation in 2018, David Mengebier served for 17 years as senior vice president of governmental, regulatory and public affairs for Consumers Energy, and president of the Consumers Energy Foundation. In this role, Mengebier led a range of corporate functions, including governmental and regulatory affairs, communications, charitable giving, community relations, and sustainability. He also served for eight years as the company's chief ethics and compliance officer.
Before joining Consumers Energy, David served as legislative counsel for Handgun Control, Inc. and worked for six years as a legislative aide in the U.S. House of Representatives. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Public Administration, and Political Science from Michigan State University and a Law Degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School. David earned an MBA from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan in 2006.
Over his career, David has served on a number of non-profit boards, including chair of Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw County, chair of Jackson County United Way, the Great Lakes Water Quality Board, Michigan Chamber of Commerce, and most recently, northwest Michigan’s regional economic development organization, Traverse Connect, and the Little Traverse Conservancy.
David moved to Traverse City in June 2016, has three adult daughters, two dogs named Mango and Clover, and is engaged to his partner, Kelli.
