217 Recovery, a nonprofit based out of Traverse City, is a multifaceted resource for those impacted by addiction. It was created by those recovering from addiction who believe that hope and inspiration are vital aspects of recovery.
In 2025, 217 Recovery received two grants from us to support their recovery rides program—one from our diversity, equity, inclusion grants and the other through our Quick Response Grants. Recovery rides are peer-led transportation services provided by Michigan Certified Peer Recovery Coaches who have completed state-recognized training and ongoing continuing education. These rides are far more than just getting from Point A to Point B; they’re an opportunity for one-on-one recovery coaching that can help get individuals on the road to recovery.
“We transport individuals to and from substance use disorder treatment, recovery support services, sober living homes, and other critical appointments connected to their recovery,” said 217 Recovery Founder and Executive Director Corey Winfield. “Transportation is one of the most significant barriers people face, especially during transitions like leaving treatment or incarceration. These rides provide immediate peer support at moments when people are most vulnerable.”
Funds from the two awarded grants covered transportation reimbursement, helping offset fuel, insurance, and vehicle costs for recovery rides. These grants enabled 217 Recovery to complete 19 transports and log 3,636 miles while connecting individuals from Grand Traverse County to treatment facilities across Michigan. As a newer grant partner, receiving Community Foundation funding felt like recognition to Corey and the 217 Recovery team.
“For a grassroots organization like ours, this kind of trust and validation goes a long way,” said Corey. “It also made us feel more connected to the community and affirmed that people understand the value of recovery coaching and its role in helping individuals access care.”
217 Recovery began as a podcast in 2019 while Corey was living in sober housing in Boyne City. This outlet of creativity and honesty led to the nonprofit’s founding and to eventually finding a physical location in 2023. Since opening its doors, 217 Recovery has had 3,000 individuals sign in and has completed over 1,000 recovery rides.
“Recovery doesn’t wait, and delays in support can mean missed opportunities for treatment,” shared Corey. “Community foundations play a critical role because they can respond quickly to real needs happening right now. The flexibility of community-based support allows us to respond immediately and ensure recovery opportunities aren’t lost.”
