Community Foundation Awards Over $222,000 in Scholarships

Students from throughout our five-county region will be attending college in the fall with scholarship funding from the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, which has already awarded $222,683 in scholarships in 2018.

“The majority of our scholarships are geared toward supporting current high school seniors and helping them transition to college with financial assistance, though we do also have existing scholarships for both returning students and non-traditional college students,” said program officer, Gina Thornbury.

Nearly half of the 216 scholarships awarded were granted from a partnership with Traverse City Area Public Schools through 45 unique funds and endowments specifically designated to benefit a student or students from one or more of the three TCAPS High Schools. The remaining 114 scholarships were granted from our Regional Scholarships, which are available to students from one or more schools throughout the region.

Because the Community Foundation is intent on matching donor passion with purpose, there is a diverse array of scholarship opportunities available to local students. Scholarship eligibility and criteria are related to things like academic performance, financial need, community involvement, and planned major or career path. The Community Foundation also works closely with donors when a gift is made to create a scholarship, helping to identify the criteria that are meaningful to the donor and then working to accomplish the donor’s goals long-term.

“We’ve found that there are a variety of factors that draw donors to creating a scholarship fund – it offers the opportunity to remember a loved one; to impact future generations of young people; or to leave a personal legacy in a way that is meaningful to and honors the donor,” said Alison Metiva, Vice President, Strategic Engagement and Programs. “And it is our job as stewards of community gifts to ensure the donor’s intent is met year after year.”
