Kevin Rogols and Lodi Trading Company Named 2019 Kalkaska Citizen and Business of the Year

Continuing a long-standing community tradition, this year’s Citizen and Business of the Year have been named.

Kevin Rogols is the 2019 Citizen of the Year. Known for his role as the Administrator and CEO of Kalkaska Memorial Health Center (KMHC), Rogols moved to the community five years ago. The nominations for Rogols shared a similar theme – he has been instrumental in the growth and success of KMHC over the last several years, and he also goes above and beyond to serve the local community outside of his professional role. He has is an active part of Brownfield Development and Kalkaska Rotary, and attending township and village meetings and supporting as many events around the community as possible. Recently, KMHC received two distinguished awards: the 2019 Governor’s Award of Excellence for outstanding achievements in improving the quality of healthcare in Michigan and was named a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital in the country by the Chartis Center for Rural Health.

Lodi Trading Company is the 2019 Business of the Year. Lodi Trading Company, owned by Zack and Kate Cox, is a division of Natural Farm Products. The business has roots with Zack’s family as his parents began pursuing an interest in organic farming when Zack was just two years old. Zack often traveled with his dad, making deliveries from the time he was a toddler. In 2000, Zack purchased the business from his parents and led the business in a new direction, including expanding offerings within the store to include more clothing, annual and perennial plants, and bulk deer feed. In 2008, the family business expanded when Zack married Kate and continued to expand as their five children were born. The Cox family is known for their contributions to the community, including customer appreciation day every October, and their steadfast focus on the needs of their customers.

The award winners will be honored at the 2019 Kalkaska Annual Luncheon on Wednesday, April 25. The luncheon will be held from 11:30 am – 1 pm at the Kalkaska Church of Christ. Tickets are available at https://business.tcchamber.org/events/details/kalkaska-annual-luncheon-2019-5802.

The Traverse City Chamber of Commerce and the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation have partnered to host the annual event. Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan is the presenting sponsor. The Luncheon will also feature keynote speaker, Bill Marsh Jr. and his presentation, “Four Keys to Making Better Decisions: In work and in life.”

“This event is a respected tradition and celebration within the Kalkaska community,” said Andi Wagenschutz, event volunteer and Community Foundation Board Director. “The partnership between the Community Foundation and the Chamber represents the commitment of both organizations to the Kalkaska area and to our community.”

In addition to recognizing and honoring the Kalkaska Business and Citizen of the Year, the event supports a scholarship award for Miss Kalkaska and – new this year – event proceeds will support the Endowment for Kalkaska Area at the Community Foundation.

“This endowment is dedicated to supporting the Kalkaska community and grants are decided by our Board Directors from Kalkaska County. It’s a local giving option, with local decision-makers, and local impact,” said Alison Metiva, vice-president strategic engagement and programs at the Community Foundation.

Grants from the Endowment have supported the Kalkaska Conservation District, KAIR, the Commission on Aging and, most recently, helped to bring Blessings in a Backpack to Kalkaska schools.
