New Community Foundation Endowments Support Area Youth
Two recently established Community Foundation Endowments are positioned to honor the legacy of local leaders – Jim and Ida Tompkins – and ensure annual benefit for area youth, for generations to come.
Ida Tompkins was the Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance and later a member of the Board of Education, serving TCAPS for 48 years. Jim Tompkins (1932-2014) had a career of 36 years with the City of Traverse City, serving as City Clerk, City Commissioner, and Mayor. Mr. and Mrs. Tompkins dedicated their lives to the local community, both professionally and through their volunteer work.
The Tompkins Scholarship Endowment was established at the Community Foundation in 2016 through the Jim and Ida Tompkins Scholarship Trust. The Community Foundation awards scholarships annually for the benefit of graduates from Traverse City Area Public Schools. Awards are based primarily on academic achievement.
Last year, the Community Foundation awarded nine scholarships from the Tompkins scholarship endowment to six graduating high school seniors and three current college students who all previously graduated from Traverse City Area Public Schools. In total, the Community Foundation awarded $38,500 from the Jim and Ida Tompkins Scholarship Endowment in 2018.
The Jim Tompkins Endowment was established at the Community Foundation in 2018 for the purpose of supporting youth in Traverse City. Through our fall grant cycle, area nonprofits submit grant proposals for project and program funding available through the Community Foundation.
This past fall, the first grants were awarded from the Jim Tompkins Endowment totaling $39,285. The grantees included Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Northwestern Michigan for a mentoring specialist, Child & Family Services of NW Michigan for the YouthWorks program, Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools for a robotics course, Grand Traverse Bay YMCA for water safety training, Mobilized Youth Ministries for scouting gear, MSU Extension 4-H for Junior Master Gardener training, Traverse City Tritons Rowing for safety and equipment improvements, Vasa Ski Club for the Nordic Striders program, and the Young Marines of Traverse City’s youth program.
