Great Lakes Protection
In 2017, the Great Lakes Protection Fund agreed to provide a grant to Council of Michigan Foundations to enable community foundations to convene, plan, and implement activities designed to improve economic and environmental vitality throughout the Great Lakes Basin. Efforts are now underway in six regions in the US and Canada, including the Upper Lake Michigan Region which consists of the eight counties served by the Petoskey-Harbor Springs, Charlevoix County, Grand Traverse Regional, Leelanau Township, and Manistee County Community Foundations.
The Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, in partnership with several other Community Foundations, is serving as a convener of local nonprofit and community partners and units of government. Together these groups are developing a plan to address opportunities, engage citizens across the region, and leverage resources and to increase education, advocacy, and programs related to storm water retention, river and lakeshore restoration, and overall water protection.
