Regional Scholarships Guide
We believe that post-secondary education is key to healthy, resilient, and thriving communities and are pleased to partner with generous community donors to create and offer a variety of scholarship opportunities for local students across the region.
- AAUW- TC Minnie Votruba Moore Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Available to assist area women who are seeking opportunities to enrich their educational credentials to enhance their personal and/or career opportunities. Eligible students will have completed two or more years of college following their high school education and are enrolled, or will be enrolling, in at least nine hours each term/semester in an accredited program, and who reside in the five county Grand Traverse Region.
- Bennie M. Kline Scholarship Endowment (Antrim County)
Available to graduating seniors from Elk Rapids High School and residents of the Elk Rapids Area. Applicants must be pursuing or planning to pursue a trade or technical career. Individuals who have been out of school for a period of time and are going back to school are encouraged to apply. Previous recipients are eligible to apply.
- Benzie Central Legacy Scholarship Endowment (Benzie County)
Available to graduating seniors from Benzie County Central Schools planning to pursue postsecondary education including a certificate or degree program at an accredited school. Emphasis will be placed on character, citizenship, and service to the school and community. Financial need and academic achievement are considered but not primary factors.
- Benzie Central Science Scholarship Endowment (Benzie County)
Available to graduating students from Benzie Central High School who plan to pursue higher education in the science field. Applicants must have shown an expressed interest in science, have excelled in the field, and demonstrate financial need.
- Buckley Schools Marie Guyton Scholarship Endowment (Grand Traverse County)
Available to graduating seniors from Buckley Community Schools. The Endowment supports three scholarships annually: the Marie Guyton Valedictorian Scholarship (no application), Eleanor Smith Salutatorian Scholarship (no application), and Marie Guyton Leadership Scholarship (competitive application process).
- Camp Roy-El Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Available to college-level juniors and seniors currently completing undergraduate degrees at Michigan-based colleges and universities. Applicants must be pursuing a profession dedicated to working with persons with disabilities and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA. Possible fields may include allied health, nursing, medicine, occupational therapy and physical therapy or students in social work and special education. Previous applicants are eligible to apply.
- Central Lake School District Osborn Scholarship Endowment (Antrim County)
Available to graduating seniors from Central Lake Public Schools that are in the top 20 percent of their class and demonstrate strong academic performance.
- Dr. Roy Vomastek Memorial Scholarship Endowment (Benzie County)
Available for Crystal Downs Country Club caddies and bagroom employees.
- Drenth Family Memorial Scholarship Endowment (Antrim County)
Available to graduating seniors from Ellsworth Community School, with priority for students who plan to pursue an occupation in nursing, education or a vocational (trade) career. Academic achievement, leadership, and character may also be considered.
- Ed and Nessa Laing Scholarship Endowment (Leelanau County, Regional)
Available to graduating seniors that are planning to pursue a post-secondary education (including trade school, certification program, college, or university) with a focus on preparation for a trade, technical or vocational profession. Preference is given first for students from Suttons Bay Public Schools; second for students from Leelanau County, and third for students from Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse and Kalkaska Counties. Financial need, demonstrated community involvement, volunteerism/ leadership activities will be considered.
- Elk Rapids Industrial Development Corporation Scholarship Endowment (Antrim County)
Available to Elk Rapids High School graduates and graduating seniors that demonstrate a minimum 2.5 GPA and that are planning to enter a vocational program in a college, trade school, or an apprentice training program.
- Elk Rapids Scholarship Endowment (Antrim County)
Available to graduating seniors from Elk Rapids High School who have earned a minimum 3.75 GPA.
- Emily and Frank Smiddy Scholarship Endowment (Benzie County)
Available to graduating seniors from Benzie County high schools planning to pursue postsecondary education in the sciences or STEM. Awards are available to be renewed annually for up to a total of four years of support.
- Ernest B. Isaacsen Scholarship Endowment (Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau Counties)
Available to graduating seniors from Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Counties who are planning to attend Northwestern Michigan College, Michigan State University, University of Michigan or Wayne State University. Eligible students must demonstrate financial need. Academic performance will be considered.
- Fred Muller Scholarship Endowment (Benzie County)
Available to Crystal Downs Country Club employees or their children, Crystal Downs Country Club golf professionals, and Golf Shop staff.
- Gene’s Auto Parts for the GT Academy Scholarship Endowment (Grand Traverse County)
Available to graduating seniors from Grand Traverse Academy and/or children of Gene’s Auto Parts employees that are planning to pursue a post-secondary education (including trade and vocational schools) and that demonstrate financial need.
- Giving JAR Scholarship Fund (Regional)
Available to graduating seniors from Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska or Leelanau Counties that are planning to attend college with a goal of becoming teachers, coaches or other vocations ultimately giving back to youth within the communities they choose to live in. Financial need, academic performance, and community service involvement will be considered.
- Helen and Dale Cropsey Scholarship Endowment (Leelanau County)
Available to residents of the Suttons Bay or the Bingham area, including graduating high school seniors and students currently attending an accredited post secondary educational institution in the state of Michigan. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and attend church in the Suttons Bay or Bingham area. Priority will be given to students attending/planning to attend Michigan State University and who attend Immanuel Lutheran Church or First Lutheran Church. Previous recipients are eligible to apply.
- Home Builders' Association of the GT Area Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Available to residents from Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska or Leelanau Counties who are pursuing continuing education related to the home building industry.
- Ida Palmer Weigand Memorial Scholarship Endowment (Leelanau County)
Awarded to the male and female with the highest SAT score from the Suttons Bay High School graduating class.
- Jack Edward Allen Memorial Scholarship Endowment (Grand Traverse County)
Available to graduating seniors from a Traverse City area high school and who have attained the Eagle Scout ranking from the Boy Scouts of America.
- Jerry and Carol Inman Scholarship Endowment (Grand Traverse County)
Available to students graduating from Kingsley High School. Academic performance, character, leadership, and participation beyond the classroom will be considered.
- Jim Ooley Scholarship Fund (Grand Traverse County)
Available to graduating seniors from Traverse City Central, Traverse City West and Traverse City St. Francis High School that demonstrate success as a student-athlete.
- Joan Jackson Memorial Scholarship Fund (Regional)
Available to benefit young conservative women that wish to pursue activities in politics and public service.
- Joe Brisson Memorial Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Available to a graduating senior from Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, or Leelanau County. Applicants must demonstrate adventurous spirit, a passion and zest for life, and will have played in a soccer league, whether school or community related.
- John Rowland Gehring Science Scholarship Endowment (Benzie County)
Available to graduating seniors from Benzie Central High School that are planning to pursue a degree in the science field.
- John S.E. Dieckman Husky Scholarship Endowment (Benzie County)
Available to graduating seniors from Benzie County Central Schools planning to pursue postsecondary education including a certificate or degree program at an accredited school. Emphasis is placed on character, citizenship, and service to the school and community. Financial need is also a consideration.
- Judith Lang Journalism Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Supports scholarship awards for area students that demonstrate excellence in nonfiction writing. Winners are determined annually in cooperation with the Community Foundation/ National Writers Series competitive process.
- Kalee Bruce Memorial Scholarship Endowment (Benzie County)
Available to graduating seniors from Benzie or Frankfort High Schools who are planning to pursue post-secondary education.
- Kathy Larkin Alba Scholarship Fund (Antrim County)
Available to graduating seniors from Alba Public School who have demonstrated academic excellence and have expressed interest in entering a public service field (including but not limited to teaching, social work, firefighting, law enforcement, or the military).
- Katie Bigelow NP Memorial Scholarship (Regional)
Available to support single mothers who are enrolled in a post-secondary degree program and reside in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, or Leelanau County. Preference is given to those pursuing programs in the medical or health care field.
- Leslie Lee Nonfiction Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Available to public, parochial, or home school students that reside in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, or Leelanau Counties. Students must be a junior or a senior during the award year. To apply, students must complete an online application and submit a non-fiction manuscript as part of the Community Foundation Traverse City National Writers Series Scholarship competitive process.
- LGBTQ Pride Scholarship Fund (Regional)
Available to LGBTQ+ students and students who see themselves as LGBTQ+ allies that are pursuing post-secondary education. Graduating seniors from a public high school within Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau Counties are eligible to apply.
- Mancelona Rotary Club Scholarship Endowment (Antrim County)
Available to graduating seniors from Mancelona High School who are planning to pursue a post-secondary education.
- Marjory Veliquette Memorial Scholarship Endowment (Antrim County)
Available to participants in the Miss Elk Rapids Scholarship Pageant. Scholarship selection will be based on demonstration of a servant’s heart, display of a spirit of giving, and a commitment to community service. No application required
- Michele Vozza More Than Robots Scholarship Fund (Regional)
Available to high school juniors and/or seniors in the five-county region that have participated in FIRST Robotics during their high school career.
- Michigan County Medical Care Facilities Council Scholarship Endowment (Regional/Other)
Available to Michigan-based college students that are employees, or the spouse or child of employees, of an MCMCFC member facility and that are in a health and human services field of study.
- Miss Elk Rapids Scholarship Endowment (Antrim County)
Supports educational scholarships for the Miss Elk Rapids Scholarship Pageant winners. Information about participation in the Miss Elk Rapids Scholarship Program and Pageant, contact co-directors, Marcia Price at (231) 357-4668 or Charolotte Ball at (231) 633-5595. No application required
- National Writers Series Scholarship Fund (Regional)
Available to public, parochial, or home school students with permanent residential addresses in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, or Leelanau Counties. Students must be a junior or a senior during the award year. To apply, students must complete an online application and submit a poetry, fiction, journalism, or non-fiction manuscript.
- Northwest Education Services Career Tech Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Available to students from the five county area that are enrolled at the Career Tech Center. Students may apply for two types of scholarships: Academic Award or Tools of the Trade Award.
- Northwest Michigan Osteopathic Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Available to MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine students that are in good standing and that have a connection to rural, Northern Michigan.
- Otho Mathias Scholarship Endowment (Antrim County)
Available to a Mancelona High School graduating senior, or a previous recipient of this scholarship, who is pursuing or planning to pursue a degree in education.
- Owen James Anderson Memorial Scholarship Endowment (Antrim County)
Available to graduating seniors from Elk Rapids School District, with preferences for students who are Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Tribal Members, students pursuing a career in Construction Management, or students whose hobbies/ interests include hunting, fishing, snowboarding, or four-tracking.
- Peter James Gorno Scholarship Endowment (Antrim County and Caro, MI)
Available to one graduating senior from Elk Rapids High School and one graduating senior from Caro High School who are pursing a post-secondary education.
- Ragland Bloem Scholarship Fund (Antrim and Kalkaska Counties)
Available to graduating seniors from Antrim or Kalkaska Counties who are planning to pursue education in environmental or related studies.
- Recovery Road Scholarship Fund (Regional)
Available to students from the Region who have a parent that has lost their battle with drug addiction.
- Riopelle/Dowden Technical Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Available to students from the five county area that are enrolled, or planning to enroll, in an associate's degree, certificate, or apprenticeship program.
- Robert Paul Dost Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Available to graduating high school seniors in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau Counties who are planning to pursue electrical engineering. Preference will be given to students that are the son or daughter of a member of the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers, Local 498.
- Robert S. “Robbie” Detwiler Memorial Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Available for enrolled college students from Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, or Leelanau County that are pursuing a degree in architecture.
- Scott Day Memorial Scholarship Fund (Kalkaska County)
Available to a graduating senior from Kalkaska High School. Priority consideration will be given to students that plan to pursue a major and career within the field of education and a demonstration of financial need will be considered.
- Stan and Martha Scarborough Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Available to individuals, up to 24, from Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, or Leelanau County who have aged out of foster care.
- Suzanne Cline-Walthour Memorial Scholarship Endowment (Antrim County)
Available to graduating seniors from Elk Rapids High School with preference for, but not limited to, students planning to pursue an elementary education degree and/or planning to attend Ferris State University.
- Tompkins Scholarship Endowment (Grand Traverse County - TCAPS only)
The Tompkins Scholarship Endowment was established be to provide scholarship awards to benefit graduates from Traverse City Area Public Schools. Awards will be based primarily on academic achievement without consideration of financial need. Individual scholarship awards are intended to be significant in nature and may be renewable for future years.
- Traverse City Tourism Hospitality Scholarship Fund (Benzie and Grand Traverse Counties)
Available to graduating high school seniors from Benzie or Grand Traverse Counties, or current NMC students pursuing degrees, industry certifications, or careers in hospitality or tourism-related studies. Preference given to those who are active in school and extracurricular activities, who have demonstrated community responsibility through volunteer efforts, and who have held jobs in the hospitality industry and are excited to continue. Financial need will be considered.
- Traverse City Track Club Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Available to graduating high school seniors or current college students from Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska or Leelanau County. Eligible students will have demonstrated involvement with running, as a high school or college athlete or through participation in organized running events.
- University Center Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
The Marvin and Luella Rorick Scholarship and the Richard and Clarine Olson Scholarship are available for students enrolled at the NMC University Center who are pursuing a degree in the human services field, including social work, nursing, family life, etc.
- USS Indianapolis/Gwinn “Angel” Scholarship Endowment (Regional/Other)
Available to descendants (includes stepchildren) of USS Indianapolis CA-35 crew members involved in the tragedy– its survivors, lost at sea (LAS), rescue and recovery crew, and those who have merited honorary survivor status by the Survivors Organization.
- William Montgomery Fiction Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Supports scholarship awards for area students that demonstrate excellence in fiction writing. Winners are determined annually in cooperation with the Community Foundation/ National Writers Series competitive process.
- Women’s Auxiliary of Crystal Downs Country Club Scholarship Endowment (Benzie County)
Available to Crystal Downs Country Club employees or their children, Crystal Downs Country Club golf professionals, and Golf Shop staff.
- Zonta–Ann Mapes Scholarship Endowment (Regional)
Available for women pursuing a degree in business, science, maritime, aviation, culinary or nursing, leading to career employment. Eligible students will be enrolled at a minimum as a junior in any state accredited college, or a NMC Baccalaureate program, with at least a 3.0 GPA, and be a resident of Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Benzie, Kalkaska, or Antrim Counties.
